The Starlet has been praised both at home and abroad for responding in full to the needs of today's drivers for uncompromising fuel efficiency. The new Starlet is available in vans (commercial-use oriented station wagons) and 3-door and 5-door sedans. A new water pump is mentioned however, and as the wide open bay hints at, there’s plenty of room for more engine here–4A-GE swaps are popular and fairly straightforward, though we think a 70’s 2.0 liter 18R-G carb-fed twin cam would be even cooler.TOKYO―TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION today released a remodeled version of the popular-size Starlet passenger car for nationwide sale in Japan. The seller notes that the odometer reads 274k miles, but adds that the original engine has “been worked on” in the past–no further details are provided. The 1.3 liter 4K-C was good for about 58 HP in California trim, though here it’s been fitted with a Weber carb which could make future smog checks tricky. There’s a Nardi wheel and matching wood shift knob as well as an aftermarket head unit in the dash, but everything else looks fairly standard including a desirable factory tach. A lot of remaining Starlets are pretty ratty inside, often with rear seats, carpets and trim that’s been pulled.įront seats look like they could be recovered originals, and upholstery is very close to the rears albeit without the red stripes. The rear seats look to be original, and though it’s been cut for a 6″x9″ speaker, the side panel and rear inner fender upholstery both look nice and clean. Fender mirrors always divide opinion, but period 14″ Takechi Project Hart wheels are a great choice and seem to be of just the right width and offset too. The rear bumper was truly massive on US-spec cars and has been removed on this example–there’s no word on its inclusion. The seller doesn’t provide any full-frame photos of the car from the rear, but what is shown looks straight with pretty decent paint finish. Find it here on eBay in Salem, Oregon with no reserve. The seller adds that it runs and drives very well for the most part, and from what can be seen the car would likely make a good candidate for a corporate twin cam swap–even stock with ~60 HP it could still be lots of fun. This 1982 Toyota Starlet looks unusually well kept inside and out, and despite the cool period Hart wheels, ride height adjustment and fender mirrors, the car otherwise remains mostly original including its 1.3 liter 4K-C four-cylinder and factory paint.
